Geraldine D. Humphreys Cultural Center (photo)
1710 Sam Houston Avenue, Liberty
(936) 336-8901

The Geraldine D. Humphreys Cultural Center, constructed in 1970, houses the 37,000-volume Liberty Municipal Library. The library hosts several events for children and teens including a Summer Reading Program, and a Literacy Program for adults. High-speed Internet access is available to the public.

The Humphreys Cultural Center is also home to the Humphreys-Burson Theatre, and the local theatre group known as Valley Players.

In 1976, as a Bicentennial Project, a bell tower (photo) was erected on the grounds to accommodate the first exact replica of the historic Liberty Bell. The bell was cast by White Chapel Bell Foundry in London to serve as a symbol of the Liberty Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. It was dedicated on the Courthouse Square in 1960 and rung sixteen times by the late actor John Wayne.

The bell is normally rung for special events throughout the year, including New Years and the Fourth of July.
